Life on Pawleys runs at low tide and golf-cart speed. As one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, it draws families who have come back for decades and newcomers who want quiet over spectacle. The Hammock Shops Village — where the original rope hammocks are still woven — has anchored island shopping and dining since the 1930s.
Things to do
- Huntington Beach State Park — an undeveloped beach, the best birding on the coast, and the Moorish-style Atalaya Castle.
- Brookgreen Gardens — the country's largest sculpture garden, just across Highway 17.

The market & the homes
Pawleys splits into two addresses. Oceanfront means classic raised cottages and a handful of trophy estates facing the Atlantic. Creekside trades the surf for sunset views, private docks, and marsh access — often at a friendlier price. Across the bridge on the mainland, gated and golf communities (think Pawleys Plantation and Caledonia) offer newer construction with the same zip code and quicker access to shops and schools.
Schools & the practical stuff
The island is zoned to Georgetown County School District, with the Waccamaw schools a particular draw for relocating families. Day-to-day errands run up to Pawleys' mainland or down to Georgetown; the nearest major airport is Myrtle Beach International, about 45 minutes north.
